Set sag, preload, and rebound on your Harley Softail MY20+ IFP QSR rear shock with a step-by-step process that avoids common tuning mistakes.

Quick answer

Set rider sag first, then tune rebound, and only adjust preload afterward if the sag number is off. Work in small increments and record each change so you can return to a setting that felt better.

Why sag comes before rebound on the IFP QSR

Sag sets how much of the shock's travel is used just by the bike and rider. If you tune rebound before sag is correct, you are adjusting damping around a spring position that will change as soon as you fix preload. The IFP QSR's internal floating piston keeps damping consistent over long rides, but it cannot compensate for a spring that is set too soft or too stiff.

Do sag checks with the bike loaded the way you normally ride: rider only, rider plus luggage, or two-up. A common mistake is setting sag on an empty bike and then wondering why the ride feels harsh when a passenger climbs on.

When to change preload instead of rebound

If the rear sits too low or bottoms out over sharp bumps, add preload. If the bike feels stiff and skips over small bumps even with correct sag, reduce preload before touching rebound. Rebound changes how quickly the shock returns after a bump, not how far it compresses.

The IFP QSR has an extended length option, so confirm you ordered the correct length for your Softail MY20+ before you start measuring sag. A shock that is the wrong length will give misleading sag numbers.

A note on damping control and passenger loads

The IFP design separates nitrogen gas from shock oil, which helps maintain damping control during long rides. That consistency is useful when you switch between solo and two-up riding, but you still need to reset sag for the heavier load. Do not assume the shock will self-adjust.

If you frequently carry a passenger, record two sag numbers: one for solo and one for two-up. Then you can change preload between them without guessing.

Step-by-step IFP QSR setup

  1. Measure static sag: With the bike upright and unladen, measure from the rear axle to a fixed point on the tail. Lift the rear until the shock is fully extended and measure again. The difference is static sag. Record this number before you add rider weight.
  2. Measure rider sag: Have the rider sit on the bike in normal riding gear, feet on pegs. Bounce the rear once and let it settle, then measure again. Subtract the static sag number to get rider sag. Use the same measuring points every time; a small change in reference point makes the number meaningless.
  3. Adjust preload to hit target sag: Turn the preload adjuster in small increments until rider sag matches your target. If you do not have a target from your manual or suspension shop, start with roughly 25–30% of total rear wheel travel as a practical range, then refine by feel. Re-measure after every preload change; do not estimate by counting turns.
  4. Set rebound starting point: Turn the rebound adjuster to the middle of its range as a baseline. Push down hard on the rear and watch how it returns: it should come up smoothly and settle without bouncing past level. If it bounces past level, add rebound damping; if it packs down over repeated bumps, reduce it.
  5. Test rebound on a known road: Ride a short loop with a mix of sharp bumps and smooth pavement. Change rebound one click at a time and repeat the loop. Stop when the rear tracks the road without kicking or packing. Make one change at a time and write it down; multiple simultaneous changes hide which one helped.
  6. Reset sag for passenger or luggage: Add preload for the extra load until rider sag returns to your target range. Do not change rebound unless the ride quality still feels wrong after sag is corrected. Keep a note of preload settings for solo and loaded riding so you can switch quickly.
